About Kaikoura
With a population just over 3,200, Kaikoura is a town with a fascinating history. The Maori name "Kaikoura" translates to "meal of crayfish", and it is crayfish for which the region has traditionally been famous.
Today Kaikoura is recognised for the richness and diversity of its marine life. Several species of whales can be seen offshore along with pods of dusky dolphins. Colonies of fur seals are dotted along the coastline, and many pelagic birds - including the Southern Royal Albatross and Hutton's Shearwaters - are regular visitors or permanent residents.
Kaikoura is a key tourism destination, with the local Maori playing a major role in promoting Kaikoura onto a global stage.
Kaikoura is also home to an eclectic mix of artists and craftspeople, all of whom creatively incorporate local flavour into their designs. Wonderful local products can be seen in galleries in and around town, including paintings, jewellery and wood turning.
There is always something happening in Kaikoura, something for everyone... all year round.
